Hand-stitched zero waste hoodie
Second completely hand-sewn garment: a gender-neutral zero waste hoodie!
Another war broke out as I was finishing this, and I haven’t felt like posting to my grid since, between the climate crisis, the state of politics, global pandemics, cultural wars and literal wars… But making things is how I keep my mind quiet and my hands busy despite the world crashing down in a pile of hot 💩 all around me. And I need to document them before I forget the details, so here we are!
This is the open source #zerowastehoodie by @shellyxudesign. It comes in two sizes but is quite easy to adapt: I adjusted the layout to fit my fabric, made it significantly shorter because I’m so incredibly tall obviously 😆, and sloped the shoulders with angled seams to avoid the bunching I always get on straight-shoulder patterns. I sewed the shoulders further in (reducing the neckline) and crossed the front of the hood over to compensate. I also added a channel in the hood for a cord, and made the pocket sides angled so it fits my small frame better. I had planned to lower the front neckline but I ended up liking the coverage for extra warmth.
I made this from a remnant of recycled sweatshirt fleece and sewed the whole garment by hand with a needle and thread. I really liked the slow process of taking each stitch, and spending that much time on it made this hoodie so much more special to me than it probably would have been otherwise. Also who even does a thing like hand sewing a hoodie 😅 Join me in hand sewing modern clothes so we can be weirdos together. You don’t need much equipment and it’s the perfect antidote to fast fashion! 😎
P.S. I’ve been wearing this hoodie a lot since I made it, so it’s covered in dog fur 🤷♀️ (this is exactly why I usually document as soon as I can after finishing).
