Zero waste project 12: hoodie cape

Zero waste project 12: a hoodie cape 😎

This one isn’t for me, but for a handsome young man who speeds around in an electric wheelchair (the batmobile) due to Cerebral Palsy. Although I imagine a water resistant version working really well for riding my bike in the rain, if made from a larger square of fabric! (To cover my arms and legs more)

This is @lizhaywood3754’s cape hack of the hooded blouson pattern in her #zerowastesewingbook (she hacks her own patterns! 🤩 Hack details on her blog). The original blouson pattern is sized for 92-122cm/36-48” hips.

It’s constructed from a perfect 115cm square of snuggly recycled sweatshirt fabric. I also cut a long back slit, both to make it easier to put on while seated, and to avoid bunching in the back while Batman is in his chair. I didn’t have a zip like the pattern calls for, so I made a placket with snaps instead - using the instructions at the end of the book.

BW is pretty stoked with it, and it looks so much better than the expensive ugly things sold for people in wheelchairs! I might add a front pocket, snaps on the back placket, and a cord in the hood - but only after he’s tested it for a bit.
