Zero waste project 24: wrap overalls
Zero waste project 24 (already?!): the #simoneoveralls š
Ever since I saw @goldfinch.limited experimenting with a low/zero waste overalls pattern earlier this year, Iāve had these on my mind. I bought the pattern as soon as it was released, and it did not disappoint! You draw the pieces directly onto your fabric, and the instructions come with 7 prepared sizes (34-74ā hip) ā but also with a draft-to-measure option, so you can make these for any size!
My hip measurements put me exactly between size A and B, so I decided to draft to measure. It looked like it was going to be complicated and then it wasnāt š (although an online calculator or spreadsheet to just input your body measurements would make it even better!)
I made this from 200x135cm of mid-weight linen and had a 30x68cm rectangle left over. (I also bought 30x135cm more than I needed, should have drafted first!) I originally wanted a dark forest green, but decided this dark teal would work better with the colours I have in my wardrobe. It sewed up really easily, and is a dream to wear. The pattern has clean finishes throughout, so theyāre pretty on the inside too.
I didnāt cut the extensions for the inseam pockets as suggested for the smaller sizes, but I might come back to do that later (they fit my hands or my phone, but only just). I havenāt sewn on the back pockets yet, because the best pocket placement will depend on how I wear them.
Thereās a video with lots of cute ways to tie these overalls. So far I like to put the belt through the front channel, wrap the sides around the back, and tie a bow (inspired by some of the Greta Dungarees Iāve seen around here). I might cut the other 2 belt pieces to be able to tie at the front too (I only made one belt, but you can make two or a long one for more tying options).
I like how the legs kind of balloon out after my hips, and I might eventually make the ankles a bit narrower to exaggerate that a bit. I should have made the front bib slightly wider so the straps go straight down from my shoulders, but thatās a minor issue and I can always patch it wider later on if it bothers me.
P.S. I got photobombed by a special guest taking these photos š
