Zero waste project 6: paperbag shorts
Today I finished my 6th zero waste project: high waisted #paperbagshorts from @milan_avjc’s #acttrousers pattern!
She has a few pay-what-you-want zero waste patterns for download on her website. I downloaded this cool wide-leg high-waist trousers pattern for free, and used it to make this cute pair of shorts. I love it so much that I went back and pay for it 😁 The pattern sizing is limited to 90-106cm/35-42” hips. For made-to-measure sizing, @lizhaywood3754’s free pyjama pants pattern could be constructed much like these (find it in the July 2016 archives on her blog).
I made these shorts from exactly 68cm x 140cm (the whole fabric width) of a black linen/viscose blend. The only waste came from the tiny bits my overlocker cut off, so this was a very economical project! (See last photos) Even the crotch cutouts became cute pleated pockets, and they pass the phone-in-pocket test 😅 I might go back later and put in some hidden seam pockets too.
I really liked the paper bag waist and decided to emphasize it, so I deviated from the video instructions: I cut a full-width strip of fabric using the belt loops template, but used it for an elastic casing that sits inside under the belt area. I used the leftover fabric from that strip to cut smaller belt loops, so the gathers have more room to play. (See photo 4)
I also hesitated on how to handle the bottom hem, and ended up doing a rollover cuff hem – that way I can just iron away the cuff if I get tired of it, and go back to a simple hem! (See photo 5)
If anyone else wants to try sewing zero waste garments, I recommend all the ones I’ve tried so far!
@bonsplanscouture @emmacreacouture encore une participation à votre super défi #moncouponde1m 😁 68cm ça compte non ?
