Tulle bra ✨
Aaaand I finished my first tulle bra last night! ✨
Yet another #mayabra (pattern by @afiatelier), with the same upper cup strap shape as the previous one. While I was making it, I decided I liked the look of the fold-over elastic – so I extended both ends about 10cm above the fabric, sewed in some tulle selvedge to stabilize them as straps, and attached them to the strap elastic after the shoulder. I cut two layers of tulle for each pattern piece, in opposite grain/stretch directions as advised on the @bwear.se product page – and it holds up quite nicely! All the seams are enclosed so everything is neat and tidy. Next time I might stabilise the neckline with some clear elastic or fabric selvedge.
As soon as I’d finished this bra, I wanted to make another one with a tulle upper cup, solid lower cup, and the shiny side of the fold-over elastic – so I might try that later on! Before sewing my own bras I literally only had 2 badly fitting ones, so my goal is to make enough to do washing just once a week (less washing work and they should also last longer).
I’m so happy I decided to dive straight into lingerie sewing despite being a beginner sewist (3–4 months sewing experience). It looks more complicated than it is, and with a bit of effort you can achieve fit that no ready-to-wear brand could ever give you! And once you’ve got the fit sorted out, it’s all fun and lace from there 😎 I always thought I hated lingerie and my own body, but it turns out I just hated that nothing ever fitted. Anyone else in the same boat?
