#BRAugust2021 day 23: sewing machines 🧵

Some people think you can’t sew lingerie without fancy computerized machines, but I’m pretty happy with the results I get from my basic mechanical ones: a Janome (the workhorse I use for everything) and a cheap supermarket overlocker (for jersey knits and swim elastic). You really don’t even need an overlocker to sew lingerie, and I don’t go anywhere near it with my lace! I don’t use any special presser feet, just the normal foot, the zipper foot, and the buttonhole foot. And I literally only use the straight, zigzag and 3-step zigzag stitches for sewing lingerie!

I usually keep these two in their custom covers (made using the free @closetcorepatterns patterns). I don’t think I’ll upgrade either of these machines unless they break down in an unfixable way, or I can’t get spare parts for them. I’ve already opened up the Janome to service it myself, I like that you can do that with mechanical machines – like old cars or motorbikes.

Today’s sponsor @lilypadesigns is giving away a fitting session! I have to spend a loooot of time on fitting all my projects, because literally nothing fits “out of the box”. I’ve recently started wondering if this is largely due to my Maori body/proportions being very different from the average white one used for generic fit models? 🤔 My torso shape and volume distribution systematically put me in incorrect bra sizes 🤷‍♀️
