Zero waste project 3: boxy shirt

My 3rd zero waste project and my very first buttonholes! 💃

This is the #zwcroppedshirt by @birgittahelmersson, made from exactly 150x90cm of organic cotton teamed with mother of pearl buttons. Every tiny scrap is used, even the neck cutout is used as a facing. Even the selvedge is in there! It’s a simple pattern that works as a starting point for lots of different hacks, so I’ll be making more of these in the future. The pattern size depends on fabric width and pieces can be adjusted easily to be wider/narrower/longer/shorter.

I’ve never owned a top with this kind of silhouette and I love the cropped and oversized look, I think it goes well with my old skinny jeans. I did have to unpick and re-hem it 5cm shorter (forgot I’m short lol), but it fits as designed now. My buttonholes aren’t perfect, but I’m hoping I’ll get better with practice. (Any tips?)

I was originally planning to use this fabric for the buttoned blouse from the Dressed book by Deer and Doe, but since falling down the rabbit hole of zero waste sewing, my sewing projects are changing…
