Zero waste project 27: pyjama top ❄️
Zero waste winter pyjama top ❄️
The first set is now complete! I’ve already documented my zero waste #zwblockpant and non-zw #shaxistank. This coordinating top is a mashup of two of @birgittahelmersson’s zero waste patterns: the #zwcroppedshirt and the #zwworkwearjacket. The finished sizes of those patterns depend on the fabric width, but it’s easy to make them bigger (eg. by using wider fabric or using it on the cross grain), or smaller (eg. by not using the full width and leaving rectangular remnants).
I used the shirt pattern layout, but modified it to fit a long-sleeved top into a tiny bit less than 100x150cm of this organic brushed cotton:
- lengthened the sleeve pieces to 40cm (instead of 24cm)
- cut small pockets instead of a hem facing, and 16cm cuffs for more sleeve length (inspired by the jacket cuffs)
- narrowed the sleeve pieces accordingly to use the remaining width, and pleated them to fit the cuffs
- shortened the bodice pieces to use the remaining 57cm (I’m short and the original length was not cropped on me anyway)
- sewed shoulder darts for shaping (using the template from the jacket pattern)
- cut a higher neckline (the original is too deep for shorty me)
- French-seamed everything so it’s not scratchy inside
The result is exactly as I’d hoped: cropped to fit with the high-waisted pants but with enough coverage to keep out the cold, pockets to avoid misplacing my phone in the morning, and sleeves that I can unfold for extra length when I’m feeling extra cold. I left the selvages on but they’re only slightly visible on the sleeve seam. The finished top has about 35cm ease at the bust on me.
The eagle-eyed will notice I haven’t incorporated the triangle cutouts from the neckline – I needed them for buttonhole testing, so they got used for that and will become teddy bear stuffing later ☺️ I also didn’t bother ironing any of this set for the photos, I just want to wear them and curl up in bed.
