Zero waste project 26: wide leg trousers

Zero waste trousers 👖

This is the zero waste #zwblockpant by @birgittahelmersson. It comes in 10 sizes to fit 60-126cm waist, 86-152cm hip. It uses the entire width of the fabric, with no remnants (I even kept the selvages on), and each size has its own cutting layout.

I made these for pyjamas, in size M, from 140x150cm of soft brushed cotton. I didn’t necessarily want this colour (I bought it because the fabric is organic), but it turns out I love it! So I might end up wearing these sometimes as pants pants instead of pyjama pants.

I loved making these – the cutting layout is fun (literally starts from blocks), and it’s an easy sew. The back leg seams are cool and allow a more economical layout. I chose my size by my hip measurements and didn’t do the darts towards a smaller waistband, but I will next time. I just used a smaller length of elastic inside the waistband and ended up with more bunching than was comfortable. I topstitched the back waistband to control the gathers – I wanted them at the back so the front pleats stay pretty. Topstitching also prevents the elastic from twisting or folding, so win win.

I like the inseam and back pockets, and the tapered hem which makes these balloon slightly. Next time I’ll make that angle deeper to exaggerate the shape. I hemmed them longer than suggested by the pattern, just so I don’t feel cold when wearing them as actual pyjamas (see photo 8).

I will definitely be making more of these, I think they’d look great in lots of different kinds of fabrics! They’re soooo comfy and kind of look/feel like a mix between pants and culottes…

Sorry for the intruder in my photos, he wouldn’t get out when he saw my phone camera timer 😅
