Zero-waste project 1: undies!

My very first zero-waste project: the #zwwpanties (yeah I just made that hashtag up, I don’t think one exists yet).

Made another pair of lace #evaknickers along with these cotton zero-waste panties. They both have a similar cheeky cut but the pattern pieces look very different! I made the zero-waste panties in size M and my hips measure 98cm. This size uses 30x44cm of fabric + 65cm elastic.

I’ve been investigating zero-waste sewing lately, and @zerowastewardrobe’s patterns are so mind blowing to me that I’ve been google translating the heck out of them (links to my translations in bio). I needed more undies so this was the perfect starter project! Just as I was printing it, I saw @lizhaywood3754’s version. She wrote a whole blog post about them, which was very helpful. I cut these on the opposite fold like she suggests, to avoid a seamed front/crotch.

I wasn’t convinced by the visible stitching of the gusset piece on the front, so I added extra lace scraps to cover that (I didn’t have enough so I layered pieces like scales). I don’t like the seamed gusset much, but I’m not sure what to do about that. I really like how the other pieces fit, and I love the idea of not wasting any tiny bit of fabric.

I included photos of the zero-waste panties being worn - but erased my skin and finger painted my silhouette in place. Seeing how sewing patterns look when worn really helps me decide what patterns to try, but I don’t want photos of myself in underwear floating around on the web. These crude sketches show the fit and how much coverage these panties have (or how little, depending on your habits).

On la coupe dans un rectangle de jersey 30x44cm, aucun bout de tissu gâché. J’ai rajouté des chutes de dentelle de la 1ère pour en faire une paire !
