Scrap-busting plush toy

Something a bit different: a zero waste, scrap busting plush toy 🧸

Inspired by @dagmarsews’ soft toy she made recently for her dog, I looked into simpler patterns to try my hand at toy making too! This is the free Mr Foofs polar bear pattern by @fluffmonger, and comes in two sizes (this is the bigger one). The pattern itself doesn’t specifically use zero waste cutting, but the nature of the project means every last odd-shaped scrap can be used as filling!

This teddy bear is for the same little man that’s getting the sunhat I made previously, and I think it’s quite adorable. I used recycled fleece, a mix of shredded fabric scraps (including the fleece scraps) and recycled cotton filling to stuff it, and added a little squeaker too. I used beads for the eyes and embroidered the nose (satin stitch over a piece of black denim). The tiny scarf was my very first one haha – I skipped straight to knitting sweaters last year.

As shown in the video at the end, my dog is quite obsessed with this toy – so I will be making him a squeaky Boston Terrier baby soon (probably adapting the Corgi or Cat patterns from the same designer). I think I’ll make more to donate to the children’s hospital – I don’t need cushions or poufs, and it’s more fun to use my unusable fabric/thread/yarn scraps to make a small person happy!

(Real-life whānau, DM me if you want one for your babies!)
