I crocheted it out of rag yarn made from a year’s worth of fitting toiles. What started as a scrap busting project came to represent more than that as it grew: it literally contains the story of my sewing and fitting journey so far, and unexpected acceptance of this traumatized body.
I won’t go into details here, but sewing my own clothes, that look and fit me the way I want them to, has had a very positive impact on me. I have learned so much, gained confidence, and reawakened my creative side that had been hibernating for a few frustrating years.
The basket has a very simple construction: magic loop, double crochet in the round (increasing in each round until it’s wide enough), then double crochet up until it’s tall enough. I made my raggy rag yarn very simply, without trying to make it pretty – chopping the longest strips possible and threading them into each other with slits on each end. No sewing, just rags and a huge 15mm crochet hook.
I made this basket to hold crafting stuff in a drawer, but now that it’s finished I quite like the rustic aesthetic and the sentimentality of it. Maybe I’ll put a pot plant in it instead…
I now only have a very small amount of unwanted scraps left, I’ll make another cushion for my dog, and stuff it with the last scraps and be done with all this💃
This project reminded me how much I love crochet, I might try doing some more simple projects this year (maybe with actual yarn though).
