Fabric for a new coat

So I thought that my old trusty coat was fine – until I tried to go out wearing one of my new jumpers and realised the coat didn’t fit comfortably over any kind of jumper..(I couldn’t move my arms). 😰

I’ve had my old coat for more than 10 years, and never really noticed this limitation before – because I really don’t fit ready-to-wear clothes well, I mostly limited myself to dresses paired with tights and cardigans (which explains why I was always freezing lol). Now that I’m free to sew/knit whatever perfectly-fitting clothes I want, this coat unfortunately doesn’t fit my needs anymore. I’ll replace the damaged lining and give it away to someone who will get better use of it.

So I’m making a new one! I chose the #manteauolga wrap coat by @mounasew, because the pattern was created especially for beginners like myself (2/5 difficulty) and has a complete video tutorial on Youtube (especially helpful for clipping the collar and sewing the bagged lining). This pattern has a loose cut and a belt closure for a cinched silhouette, so I get 2 looks for the price of one 😅 I bought some nice blue wool coating and some smooth cream-coloured lining fabric with tiny skulls that no one else will notice 😜 I also plan on adding a button or two later, but first I need to learn how to sew button holes 😅

Last week I made two toiles, and spent a bit of time this weekend adjusting the pattern to fit my body and my new clothes perfectly. I started sewing Saturday evening, and the final coat is almost finished now, but I need to shorten the sleeves by about 4cm. I love it already and will post photos once it’s finished!
