Zero waste project 2: t-shirt

My second zero waste project: the #zwwtshirt by @zerowastewardrobe! (Yes I’m making up hashtags for these patterns 😅)

I started this on Saturday but my trusty old iron finally burnt out after 15 years of service. I had a new iron delivered last night and finished making this t-shirt today at lunch. I made this from some viscose jersey I bought a long time ago, and today learned that ironing viscose jersey is notoriously hard! But I like this top even with the crinkles, so I’ll be wearing it anyway.

It’s quite an interesting pattern: cut from a rectangle of fabric exactly 150x44cm, with no waste (aside from squaring up the uneven raw edge). Less than half a meter of fabric to make a T-shirt! It’s only available in one size, and the final garment measures about 94cm at the bust.

I included a photo of the pattern next to a normal t-shirt pattern that I’ve made before (the one from Dressed book by Doe and Deer). The bodice on this one is made from 7-8 pieces, and each sleeve from 4 pieces. The sleeves are quite an unusual shape but I like them! I should have taken a side view to show the oval sleeve seams on the body…

I’m not used to wearing loose t-shirts, but this pattern is only available in a single size (about EU 38 I think) - and I thought it would be fun to try anyway! I’d like to figure out how to adjust the pattern to be slightly closer fitting, and next time I’ll probably cut a separate neckband instead of just folding the fabric over as instructed.

If anyone else wants to make this and can’t be bothered Google translating the instructions, I have a link to my cleaned up machine translation in my bio (no I don’t speak Finnish).

I need a few more tops to replace my worn-out ones, so I think I’ll also try the other t-shirt from the same designer, and maybe the shirt or shirt-dress. I also bought Liz Haywood’s book, so am looking forward to making something from that too!
