Zero waste project 13: playsuit romper
Zero waste project 13: a playsuit in a soft cotton double gauze π
This is the playsuit from @lizhaywood3754βs #zerowastesewingbook. This is a very clever pattern in the tesselated category of the book: the pieces interlock together like a perfect puzzle (see last photo). This specific pattern is limited to 92-112cm/36-44β hips (it was one of Lizβs earlier works, see her comment below) β other patterns in the book can be made in any size, dependent on fabric width/length.
Iβm short and more pear-shaped than patterns are generally drafted for, so made my paper pattern accordingly. I also shortened the sleeves (which had the effect of making the inseam pockets bigger) and changed the neckline to more of a V-neck shape. β οΈ But I made a major error by drawing it based on my 135cm fabric width and not the referenced 115cm β so when I shortened for my (lack of) height, I ended up with something for a much taller body than mine, and the crotch was 10cm too low π
I pinned out 10cm and tried to use the excess as a built-in drawcord casing (see photo 9), but the pleat at the back meant 5 layers at that point. So in the end I just sewed a seam, chopped off the excess, and used it for belt loops and a waist tie instead. A departure from the pattern, but still zero waste! π
I never even wanted a jumpsuit or playsuit before I saw this pattern! I like the clean bias binding neckline finishing, the way it blouses with the back yoke and pleat, and the huge inseam pockets. Itβs super comfy and Iβd like to try making it again in a different colour β with the correct measurements and the drawcord π
